Press release – Cernavoda NPP Unit 1 disconnection from the Grid

Bucharest, 10 January 2017

Press release

SN Nuclearelectrica SA (“SNN”) announces that it has decided, in a conservative manner, to disconnect Cernavoda NPP Unit 1 from the National Power Grid, starting with 22:00 hours, in the evening of January 10th, 2017.

The controlled and planned disconnection of Unit 1 takes place in order to perform works on the excitation system of Unit’s 1 turbogenerator, reducing its sensitivity, in order to avoid potential automated disconnections from the Grid caused by weather conditions, such as was the case on 8.11.2016 and 06.01.2017. Practically, the works consist in implementing a modification of the excitation system of Unit’s 1 turbogenerator, by replacing an electronic card with a new redesigned one, which can filter more efficiently the disturbances induced by severe weather conditions.

The works performed on the excitation system of Unit 1 will take approximately 8 hours and Unit 1 will be reconnected to the National Power Grid during the morning of 11.01.2017.

Prior to taking the decision of the planned outage, SNN ensured that there will be no negative impact on the safe operation of the National Power Grid during the night of 10 to 11 of January 2017 and that the internal energy consumption is ensured.

The works on the excitation system of the turbogenerator will be carried out in compliance with the procedures of the power plant, with no negative impact on the personnel, the safety of the power plant, the population and the environment.
